Apple Cider Vinegar for Stomach Ailments

I don’t know about where you live but this winter has been brutal for colds, flu, respiratory 100_5851_optissues, strep, and stomach bugs in central Oklahoma!  Whether it’s from being cooped up inside for a good part of the winter or germs are just more prevalent this year I don’t know, but whatever it’s from I don’t want to participate!  But if a stomach bug decides to join us I’m ready to try a remedy I found in an old book entitled Folk Medicine by D. C. Jarvis, M.D.  My mother-in-law found a copy of this book and it’s very interesting to read.  It tells many ways in which Vermonters (yup, that’s the description used in this book copyrighted in 1958) used apple cider vinegar for many aches, pains, and ailments.  I’ve known of many uses for apple cider vinegar and have used several of them myself.  I have not had the opportunity to use the one I’m going to share and I hope I don’t have to, but I would certainly try it!

Folk Medicine tells of how apple cider vinegar can be used in cases of food poisoning such as salmonella and ecoli.  I’ve read that many times what seems to be stomach flu is actually food poisoning.  It would certainly be worth a shot to try the following method regardless of what the cause of distress is!

Take 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and place in a glass of water.  I like to use Bragg’s.  It is important to use an organic variety that still has the “mother” in it – meaning floaties.  That is the good bacteria which is helpful to the body.  Take a teaspoonful every 5 minutes.  This is a very small amount which hopefully will not come back up once it goes down!  When the water is gone prepare another glass and take 2 teaspoons every 5 minutes.  After that has been successfully taken prepare a third glass and take a swallow every 15 minutes.  Then for the next 2 or 3 days take a glassful of this mixture with every meal.  Keep in mind that ACV is very useful for digestive purposes anyway, so this is a good habit to develop if your digestion is lacking.
